Before we start let me just explain that no one can guarantee you top positions in the Search Engine Results. Think about it, if I (or any other web designer with half a brain) could guarantee this then we would not be messing around making other people rich. We would be too busy becoming millionaires ourselves. It is precisely because the end result cannot be guaranteed that Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) exists.
There is little point in having a small business business website if people cannot find it. The Internet is a great way of promoting your products or services to many millions of people Worldwide. The problem is that when someone is using a search engine to find a product or service you must be on the first couple of pages of results otherwise they are unlikely to find your site amongst the billions of web pages that are out there.
When people are searching for information they usually type in a word or phrase in Google or whatever search engine they are using. When they submit this search the Search Engine will display a list of results. Clearly you want to be at least on the first couple of pages of results. I can advise you on your chances of being found for your particular keywords. This is one of my specialist areas and one in which I am quite successful - after all you found this website, didn't you? At first glance you may not realise how significant this is but I am in competition with web designers and website promoters the world over for the places at the top of the search results. That should give you an indication.
The trick with SEO is trying to anticipate what words or phrases people will use to find you. Let's say that you are based in Edinburgh and you want someone to promote your website in the search engines. It is reasonable to assume that anyone looking for this service would start their Internet search by typing something like "website promotion " or "search engine promotion" into the search bar.
When they see the results they will quickly realise that these are from all over the world. They may prefer to use a UK, Scotland or Edinburgh based company so they will then narrow their search by adding a locality, perhaps "web site promotion Scotland", "website promotion Edinburgh" or "search engine promotion UK".
What we must not do is "spam" the search engines by stuffing our text with keywords. This will cause your site to drop in the rankings and it may even get your site totally banned. In actual fact in the text above I have introduced a few keyword terms that may help this page to get found but I used them in context to help me to explain the process. The tricky bit is writing intelligent copy while ensuring that it includes the words that your visitors are seeking.

the more valuable your site is as an information resource the higher it will
be ranked by the search engines. This is why "Content is King".

How Google Ranks Websites
Changes
in the way Google ranks sites have made this more difficult
than ever. If someone offers to get you top place or a top five position in Google
they are conning you. Tell them (politely!) that you are not interested. There
is no way of guaranteeing your final position in Google unless you are willing
