Search Engine Optimisation
In our first web design portfolio page we discussed writing copy for the search engines using the example "Create a website". On this page we are looking at the phrase "Web Design Portfolio".
By inserting the note about when the sites were completed at the bottom of each entry I was able to introduce several additional instances of the key phrase in a valid and natural way. I also added the phrase "Web Designer's Portfolio" to try to attract people searching for this phrase.
Web design is a very transparent business. Whatever web designers you are considering you should be able to check their previous work before accepting their quotation. This is unlike many services where all you have is the word of mouth information.
People searching for Web designers generally do so on the Internet so these web designers must be able to attract clients through their own websites and also by their portfolios of previous clients.
You should use this to your advantage, Ensure that the previous work of the designers you are considering is of the standard you require.
If the designer does not display a web design portfolio, ask yourself why?
You will probably look at a few different web designers before deciding who should create your website. If you are comparing quotations you should ensure that you are comparing like for like.
Some web designers may offer just the finished site. Others, like Toucher Web Design, will offer you a complete package including site design, graphics, submission of your site to the major search engines and search engine optimisation.

Standards and Validation
It is becoming more important to ensure that your site complies with current website design standards. Unlike most technologies web design and web browsers are very forgiving. A website can have several faults built in that are not evident while you are viewing it. This is particularly true of Internet Explorer, which allows many design faults to go undetected and displays the faulty sites with no problems being apparent.
These faults can however cause problems in other ways, "behind the scenes". The "Internet robots" that the search engines send to your site to check your content can often be confused when they find these faults and non compliances. At worst this can mean that your site will not be indexed by the search engines and hence it will not feature in their results.
The recognised authority for this is a non profit organisation called the "World Wide Web Consortium" and otherwise known as W3C. All new sites that I produce are built and validated to the required standards.

JLC Property Lettings is a letting agents in Glasgow. They are also involved in property management in the Glasgow area. We were asked to produce a website to demonstrate what they do and to list properties and flats for rent in the Glasgow area.

This is the website of Liz Mente Bishop, a children's author.
Liz wrote the children's book "Nicodemus and the Flight of the Argus", which is a children's fantasy adventure story set on the Greek Island of Mykonos.

Circuits Ltd. is a PCB Manufacture and Assembly Plant. They had a website but it needed updating to illustrate the wide variety
of printed circuit board work they do.
A content management system was also installed. This will allow them to change and update the content of their website themselves.

Caroline Hervey-Bathurst is a well known artist who works in oils, pastel, watercolour, pencil and ink.
Her range embraces portraits, family groups, horses and dogs, interiors, houses, landscapes, still lifes, flowers and botanicals and Christmas and other cards and vignettes. Many any of these are sold for the benefit of the local Parish Church and for Winchester Cathedral.
Her husband, Sir John Hervey-Bathurst, commissioned this website as a gift to his wife.
